This Friday’s big release is Deva and the film sees Shahid Kapoor stepping into an out and out action role. He plays a cop in the film and while the teaser had given an impression that he would be playing a mischievous yet tough man in uniform, the trailer had a much darker feel to it, which makes him across as far more intense.
The film does have potential but instead of taking an out and out dhamakedaar opening, it would be more on the decent side and then grow on the basis of word of mouth. Basically, this isn’t like a Rohit Shetty cop universe movie which is very big in scale, especially action, or Salman Khan’s Dabangg series, which has swag as the running factor. It’s more on the likes of Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani, which is centred on the plotline and has intensity as the driving force. Considering it’s a male centric film, the opening will be better than Mardaani films but it would be interesting to see if it manages a double digit Friday.
For now, something in the range of Rs. 5-7 crores looks more likely and there too a good chunk of business will come from Maharashtra due to the regional flavour. Shahid Kapoor’s films have traditionally opened in this range and this one should follow suit as well. There is a flurry of releases in weeks to come but this week it’s a solo arrival and that gives Deva good chance to grow well if the reports are good.
